About CORAX.chat

Why, by whom, and how.

Like email, but for chat

You send an email from Gmail to an Outlook address without a second thought. Why not your messages?

Image or video coming

Your WhatsApp message stays stuck on WhatsApp — even though it's run by the same company as Messenger and Instagram.

So reaching your grandmother, for whom all of this is far too complicated to use, your brother, who spends his whole life on his computer and Discord, or your sister, who prefers Snapchat? Mission impossible... until now!

CORAX.chat brings the email model to instant messaging and calls.

Everyone is unique, with their own preferences and needs. So a single app for everyone is, by definition, a bad idea. That's why we bet on one communication technology, called Matrix, with plenty of apps that use it.

There's a good reason email, created in 1982, is still used today. Here's what Matrix carries over from it:

  • Privacy by default

Privacy is a fundamental right. Your conversations shouldn't be making the biggest companies richer. That's why every message is end-to-end encrypted.

  • Openness and interoperability

Open code and an open-source protocol. Anyone can build their own app and talk to everyone else. Your messages will never be locked inside one company again.

  • Digital sovereignty

Your data is stored wherever you want. Every user, every community and every company keeps control.

The founder

Maxime Thoumin Desmullier

A 24-year-old software engineer, I've always wanted to put my skills to help people. My studies in the networks and security major at Clermont Auvergne INP ISIMA gave me solid grounding in infrastructure, which makes me more than just a developer.

I love getting to know people and the problems they face, and I love building products. So why not build solutions for, and with, the people I meet?

Building software for big companies is fine. But improving the daily lives of millions of people and changing the face of the world, that's what makes me tick.

How we build CORAX

Everything happens in the open, with people — not just for them.

  1. 1

    In public

Design choices are made out in the open, not behind closed doors.

  2. 2

    Open source

The code is open on GitLab: anyone can read it, verify it, contribute to it.

  3. 3

    Co-design

We go and meet people, and their feedback directly shapes the product.

A structure built to last

  • Association loi 1901 (non-profit)

Carries the project's values — privacy, transparency, open governance — and runs the community and open-source contributions.

  • SAS (upcoming)

Will fund development through premium services (managed hosting, enterprise support) without ever compromising the open-source core.
